What If My Horse Won't Stand Still? | Georgia Horse Photographer

One of the most common concerns I hear before a horse and rider photography session is, “What if my horse won't stand still?”
The good news is that your horse does not need to stand perfectly still to get beautiful photos. As a Georgia horse photographer, I work with horses with different personalities and energy levels, and a little preparation, patience, and flexibility can go a long way.
How to Prepare Your Horse for a Photo Session
Let your horse become familiar with the areas where we'll be photographing.
Practice standing quietly in those locations.
Exercise or lunge beforehand if appropriate, allowing plenty of time to cool down and dry.
Apply fly spray before the session.
If our session is around feeding time, feed your horse before we begin so they're comfortable and not distracted by hunger.
What If My Horse Won't Stand Still During the Session?
That's okay! We can adjust the session based on what makes your horse most comfortable.
Back your horse into position instead of circling whenever possible.
Incorporate walking portraits if your horse is happier moving.
Bring a familiar buddy nearby if it helps your horse relax.
Take short breaks when needed.
Move to a different location if your horse seems uncomfortable.
How I Work With Your Horse
Every horse is different, so I don't expect every session to look exactly the same. During your session, I will:
Choose locations that feel safe and comfortable for your horse.
Watch your horse's body language throughout the session.
Adjust posing ideas based on your horse's energy level.
Offer breaks whenever they're needed.
Stay patient, positive, and work at your horse's pace.
The goal isn't a perfectly behaved horse. It's creating authentic images that reflect the relationship you share. Your horse doesn't have to be a perfect model to have a successful portrait session.
If you've been putting off photos because you're worried your horse won't cooperate, don't let that stop you. Horse and rider sessions are designed to work around your horse, not the other way around.
