It was great to reconnect with Holt, a former client who is now studying at the University of Georgia. During his high school senior photography session, we created a series of images that included two of his favorite dairy heifers at the Georgia State Fair in Perry, GA.
I selected three locations around the fairgrounds to represent Holt’s Georgia 4-H show career. As a consistent top-five competitor in state showmanship classes, it was important to include images in the show ring. From there, we moved just outside the arena, using it as a background element with the word “dairy” visible over his shoulder. Finally, we stepped fully outside and worked in the shade, where I positioned him to take advantage of backlit fall sunlight filtering through the trees.
Holt’s experience working with cattle was clear throughout the session. He began showing commercial dairy heifers in fourth grade and continued through high school, often bringing multiple heifers to each show. He consistently worked with Brown Swiss cattle, a choice that set him apart visually and added a distinct look to his livestock portraits.
Beyond the show ring, Holt was deeply involved in Georgia 4-H dairy programs. He was a member of the state-winning Dairy Judging team, where participants evaluate cow conformation, and also competed on the state-winning Dairy Quiz Bowl team. These accomplishments earned him opportunities to compete at national contests in Madison, Wisconsin and Louisville, Kentucky, along with representing Georgia at the National 4-H Dairy Conference.
His background in agriculture extends beyond cattle. Holt has also spent years working with horses, particularly in western disciplines with a focus on roping. He earned Senior Champion in the Ranch division at the Georgia 4-H Horse Show and began working at a professional training facility as a teenager, where he developed hands-on experience in horse training.
Although this session focused on cattle senior portraits, his broader experience working with livestock and horses contributed to how confidently he handled animals throughout the session. That level of familiarity allows me to work efficiently while creating well-composed, professional images.
Photographing senior sessions at the Georgia State Fair provides a setting that naturally supports livestock photography, especially for 4-H and FFA exhibitors. Holt’s session reflects years of dedication to agriculture and the animals he has worked with throughout his career.
