I photographed Olivia’s senior portraits during the State 4-H and FFA Livestock Show at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry, Georgia. Livestock events like this provide a unique opportunity for senior sessions, combining meaningful locations with the animals that have shaped a student’s experience. This cattle senior portrait session focused on creating a variety of images that reflected both Olivia’s involvement in agriculture and her time in the show ring.
We worked through several areas of the fairgrounds to create a diverse and intentional gallery. I began with the iconic flags, using their structure and symmetry to frame Olivia and establish a strong sense of place. Near Reeves Arena, early spring blooms added color and contrast, while the fair food stands introduced a different visual element that reflected the atmosphere of a livestock show. We also used a quieter grove of trees to simplify the background before finishing at the fairgrounds pond, where the open space allowed for beautiful evening portraits.
I selected each location based on light, background control, and how the setting would support the subject without distraction. Working within an active show environment requires awareness and flexibility, especially when incorporating cows into a senior photo session. By adjusting angles and positioning, I was able to maintain clean compositions while keeping Olivia and her heifer comfortable throughout the process.
I’ve had the opportunity to get to know Olivia through her involvement in the dairy industry, particularly as a member of the Georgia Dairy Youth Foundation Junior Board, a nonprofit I also support. She has been showing dairy heifers since seventh grade. She has developed strong skills in showmanship, along with success in the Georgia FFA Dairy Evaluation CDE at both the individual and team level. She also works on a local dairy each month, collecting milk production data, reflecting a consistent commitment to the industry.
In addition to her work with cattle, Olivia serves as an FFA officer and competes in multiple career development events. Outside of agriculture, she is involved in cross country and track, and has spent several years volunteering through the Jr. Zookeeper Program at Chehaw and at the Flint River Aquarium. She plans to attend the University of Georgia and pursue a career as a large animal veterinarian.
Photographing livestock senior portraits at a location like the Georgia National Fair allows me to combine environment, experience, and subject into a cohesive set of images. Olivia’s session reflects the time and effort she has invested in agriculture, along with the broader experiences that have shaped her senior year.
