Over the summer, I had the honor of photographing several horse and rider pairs at Teaching with Animals, an Equine Assisted Learning and Western Horsemanship Program in McDonough, GA outside of Atlanta. The pairs ranged from two sisters to a graduating senior and more. You could tell how much trust existed between horse and rider as we moved the horses to a shaded area outside their usual living spots. They behaved well for their horse photoshoots in the fresh setting.
Teaching with Animals is a unique program that helps children and adolescents learn and grow through meaningful connections with horses. The program offers western riding lessons in a relaxed, non-competitive setting as well as equine-assisted learning sessions designed for kids who may struggle in traditional classrooms. Each participant begins with a tour and consultation to find the best fit, whether that is Equine Assisted Learning or Western Horsemanship.
Within each program, horses help participants build trust, self-confidence, and awareness. The outdoor environment encourages learning through connection and movement rather than pressure to find the “right answer” in a schoolroom. Through this process, students gain self-esteem, social skills, and emotional resilience.
As riders, we know the blessings horses bring to our lives. I’m grateful that an organization like Teaching with Animals shares those blessings with others, especially those who benefit the most. I was appreciative to do a horse photoshoot of each pair, each with their own story and spirit. To learn more about this equine learning organization, visit teachingwithanimals.com.
