Skye and Gomez The Steer | FFA Senior Livestock Photography

As a Georgia livestock photographer, I approach each livestock photography session with an understanding of what goes into the project long before the animal ever steps into the ring. These are not quick photos taken at the end of the season. They represent months and years of daily care, early mornings, feed schedules, and the steady discipline developed through 4-H and FFA involvement.
Skye and Gomez
This session features Gomez, a Simmental steer born on December 10th, 2024, and his senior showman, Skye, who serves as the President of the Northside High School FFA chapter in Georgia. Over the course of her final year, she and Gomez traveled across the Southeast, competing in jackpot shows, market steer classes, and breed divisions for beef cattle in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. They built a consistent presence in the ring, culminating in a final drive appearance at the Georgia Junior Livestock Foundation Expo.
For Skye, her experience in Georgia FFA extends well beyond the show ring. Through leadership roles, livestock judging, poultry judging, and mentoring younger members, she has developed a level of responsibility and work ethic that reflects the core values of agricultural education. Her long-term goal of becoming a veterinarian is rooted in years of hands-on experience raising animals, starting with pigs and continuing with beef cattle. She plans to attend ABAC and pursue a path in pre-vet studies.
Gomez brought a distinct personality to Skye's journey. He is playful, energetic, and at times unpredictable, especially around unfamiliar cattle. While he could be calm and engaged in familiar settings, new environments often required extra patience and awareness. Managing those moments is part of what defines a skilled exhibitor, and throughout the season, Skye developed the ability to read and respond to him with precision.
This Livestock Photography Session
Sessions like this require the same level of awareness. Timing, environment, and animal behavior all play a role in how the session unfolds, especially when working with livestock such as beef cattle, sheep, goats, or pigs. Each species presents its own challenges, and each animal brings its own temperament.
During the narrow window between the final Georgia 4-H and FFA state show and the conclusion of livestock projects, I traveled to Skye’s barn in central Georgia for her senior livestock photoshoot. We began along a pecan grove at the edge of the property, but after a short time, it became clear Gomez was more settled when back in his pasture with his herd mate. Rather than pushing him to stay in place, we moved the session to where he was most comfortable.
To keep the focus on Skye and Gomez while working in the pasture, I adjusted positioning and camera angles to compose images that worked naturally with the surrounding fences, neighboring properties, and open ground. I used the sun from multiple directions, including direct light at times, to create separation and draw attention to the pair. As the sun set, the light deepened and became more saturated, allowing for a wider range of tones and giving Skye a strong, varied final gallery.
In The End
Livestock photography tied to 4-H and FFA is about more than documentation. It reflects a stage of life where responsibility, competition, and personal growth intersect. Whether the project involves a steer, a heifer, a lamb, a goat, or pigs, each one represents a significant investment of time and effort.
As a Georgia livestock photographer, my role is to create work that reflects that level of commitment. These 4-H and FFA sessions are designed with the same care and attention that exhibitors bring to their animals, ensuring that the final images hold their value long after the show season ends.
