Georgia FFA Senior Pictures With Show Heifer
There is something especially meaningful about photographing seniors who have spent their school years involved in agriculture through Georgia FFA and 4-H. Between early mornings, long days, and the responsibility of caring for animals, their experience looks very different from the typical senior story. Sessions like this bring together senior portraits, livestock photography, and agricultural senior pictures in a way that feels personal, grounded, and true to who they are.
This Georgia FFA senior picture session featured one very special heifer, Jolly, along with a senior whose school years have been shaped by agriculture, competition, and commitment.
Meet Christian and His Dairy Heifer, Jolly
Located just outside of Athens, GA, Christian is a proud member of the Oconee County FFA chapter, where he serves as Historian. He has been actively involved in GA FFA activities, especially livestock judging and dairy judging. In addition to raising his own commercial dairy heifers, Christian also raises turkeys, showing a strong commitment to agriculture both inside and outside the show ring.
As a livestock exhibitor since middle school, Christian has built his school experience around agriculture. During high school, he was selected to serve on the Junior Board of the Georgia Dairy Youth Foundation, a nonprofit that provides financial support for dairy-related youth activities within Georgia FFA and 4-H. His years of involvement in the dairy industry made him a strong candidate to represent and support other young exhibitors across the state.
For his final year showing dairy cows, Christian was paired with Jolly, a Jersey crossbred heifer who is not easily forgotten. With a strong personality and a love for peppermints, she quickly became more than just a show cow. She brought character to everything she did and became a memorable part of Christian’s FFA livestock show career.
The Livestock Senior Picture Session near Athens, GA
As a Georgia senior photographer specializing in livestock and agricultural portraits, I love creating sessions that reflect the unique experiences of FFA and 4-H members. It was an easy decision for Christian to include his dairy heifer in his senior pictures, along with more traditional individual portraits, to create a well-rounded Georgia FFA senior photography session.
Once the final GA FFA and 4-H commercial dairy heifer show wrapped up at the Georgia National Fair in Perry, Jolly returned to her home dairy farm, where we had access to the surrounding countryside for the senior session.
For his individual senior portraits, I photographed Christian in several locations outside of Athens, GA, including a pecan grove, along the edge of a pond, and near an old dairy barn that tied back to his agricultural background. I positioned him in even shade with the sun behind him so he was softly lit, while still maintaining depth in the background.
After capturing the traditional senior pictures, we moved to the far side of the pond to photograph Christian with Jolly. This location gave us the best combination of background and natural light to highlight them together.
Even though it was late October and many of the leaves had already fallen, I used the distant tree line to filter the setting sun into a deep golden glow. With Christian and Jolly as the main subjects, I incorporated the tall pond grass as a foreground layer and the tree line as a background layer to create a more dynamic and layered composition. And of course, Jolly was the star of the session, easily keeping her ears perked and attention on Christian.
Why Livestock Photography Sessions Matter
FFA and 4-H senior pictures that include animals tell a deeper story. For students involved in agriculture, their livestock are not just part of a hobby, but part of their daily life.
Students invest months of work into raising and preparing their animals, building strong bonds along the way. Whether it is a show heifer, a steer, a goat, a pig, or a lamb, these relationships deserve to be documented. Not only to preserve how these animals looked, but what they meant to the youth exhibitor during an important season of life.
If you are part of Georgia FFA or 4-H and have an animal that has meant something special to you this year, it is always worth documenting that connection. For many students, there is always that one animal they will never forget. If you have a project animal like that, I would love to create something meaningful that reflects your story.
