This summer, I had the opportunity to photograph Sierra and her Quarter Horse gelding, Breeze, during a horse and rider portrait session at Heart of Dixie Farms in Elberton, Georgia. Located about 30 minutes from Athens, the farm provided a beautiful backdrop for capturing the special bond between horse and rider.
Breeze is a nine-year-old palomino Quarter Horse gelding. Sierra found him at an auction and, over the past year, has made tremendous progress with him through patience, trust, and consistency. They primarily compete in English at local horse shows and are currently learning to jump, but they also enjoy spending time together riding western for fun. Breeze is eager to please under saddle and, when he's out in the pasture, is known for being a frequent roller.
One of Sierra's favorite memories with Breeze happened during a quiet walk through the woods. After about an hour of exploring together, they came to a creek that Breeze was unsure about crossing. Instead of rushing him, Sierra gave him the time and confidence he needed. In the end, Breeze trusted her enough to step across without any issues. It was a simple moment that perfectly reflects the partnership they have built over the past year. By listening to Breeze and moving forward at his pace, Sierra has developed a relationship built on trust and understanding.
That partnership was evident throughout their horse and rider photography session. We captured a variety of horse and rider images and candid moments together. Breeze was photographed in a pasture that was new to him with other horses nearby, yet he remained calm, attentive, and focused on Sierra the entire evening. Watching how connected the two of them were made photographing them a pleasure.
Although it rained on the drive to the farm, the skies cleared just before we began. The remaining cloud cover created ideal lighting conditions, acting like one giant softbox across the entire pasture. Soft, even light is one of my favorite conditions for horse and rider portraits because it minimizes harsh shadows, highlights beautiful coat color, and allows us to move around the property without constantly changing our shooting direction.
Horse and rider sessions are about much more than creating beautiful portraits. They preserve the relationship, trust, and memories shared between horse and rider at a specific point in time. It was an honor to photograph Sierra and Breeze and capture a small part of their journey together on a beautiful summer evening just outside of Athens, Georgia.
